Two types of work float in Project Management

What work  float in Project management is….

Work Float in Project Management is the amount of time that an activity can be delayed from its Early Start date without affecting the finish date for all other activities that follow such activity. Float occurs only for activities that are not on the Critical path.

This shows the activities on the critical path cannot be delayed without affecting the finish date for the Project. In talking about Float, we have two types of Float in Project Management which I will discuss now as well as how to calculate them.

total float as part of work float

Total float is a type of  float where the total amount of an activity required can be delayed without delaying the project finish date.

work float
Total float is always calculated by subtracting its earliest start from its late Finish or you can subtract Early start from Late Start. Here, we can see the earliest time that activity can start as well as the latest time that an activity can finish.

free float as part of work float
This is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the earliest start of any activity that immediately follows it. Free float unlike Total float is always calculated by subtracting the Earliest finish of an activity from the Earliest start of its successor activity.
