3 Types of Baseline for Projects
When one is developing Project Managing Project Management Plans for Projects, there are some types of the baseline that are to be created. Those baselines set the minimum requirements for projects in terms of cost, schedule and scope. Once baselines are approved, they will become a sort of guide for the Project Manager, Here are the three types of baseline for projects.
#1 SCOPE BASELINE
The scope baseline is the approved version of the project scope statement, work breakdown structure and WBS Dictionary. All these talks about what is and what is not part of a project.
#2 SCHEDULE BASELINE
Schedule baseline for a project is the approved version of the schedule model that is used as a basis of comparison to the actual result. It has to do with the minimum time that all activities for the project are going to take. Non of the project is expected to take less than the duration set in the schedule baseline. If that happens, the project manager needs to find out what actually went wrong. Maybe quality has been compromised for the project.
#3 COST BASELINE
This is the approved version of the time-phased project budget that is used as a basis for comparison to the actual result. The Project Manager will always try to maintain what has been pencilled down but it is not always easy to maintain the estimate. He will over time compare the actual ( what ought to be) with the reality of the project.
