LAST UPDATED ON: 26TH AUGUST, 2019

Total Quality Management is an approach to improve business results through an emphasis on customer satisfaction, employee development, and processes rather than functions. Total Quality Management should be viewed as a long term, ongoing process rather than a one-time event.

6 Major Approaches to Total Quality Management

The concept of Total Quality Management has been implemented in various ways by different quality theorists. Here are some of the approaches.

#1 W. EDWARD DEMING

W. E DEMING focuses on continuous process improvement in which quality must be continuously improved in order to meet customer needs.

#2 JOSEPH JURAN

JOSEPH JURAN  approach to Total Quality Management breaks quality management into quality planning, control, and improvement. Quality improvement leads to breakthrough improvement, meaning improvement that raises the quality bar to an unprecedented level.

#3 PHILIP CROSBY

This man focuses on four absolute: Quality is the conformance in requirements rather than a measure of how good it is. Quality is achieved by prevention rather than inspection. Everyone in the company must work to a standard of zero defects. Lastly, Quality can be measured by determining the cost of quality.

#4 GENICHI TAGUCHI

This theorist emphasizes that Quality should be designed in the product so that the future that causes variation can be identified and controlled.

#5 BILL SMITH (6-Sigma)

This theorist emphasizes responding to customer needs and improving processes by systematically removing defects. Originally developed by Motorolla Inc. An engineer named Bill Smith. 6-Sigma now closely associated with General Electric Inc. and other major industrial companies such as Eastman Kodak.
