Technical Project Management Skills are defined as the skills needed to effectively apply project management knowledge to deliver the desired outcome for projects and programs.

The Project Manager will always have to deal with Subject Matter Experts, he needs to be well-grounded in Technical Project Management Skills.

Here are some of the skills that you can classify as technical skills for Project Managers.

#1 Critical elements

The Project Manager as the leader of the project must be able to manage the different parts of the project. He is expected to understand the quality expectations for the project and ensure that he come up with the desired outputs expected by the project stakeholders.



He has to study past artefacts relating to the project and ensure that mistakes of the past are not repeated again.

One of the aspects of these elements includes setting to make sure that he educate stakeholders and hold team members accountable for the project success. He has to ensure that all major deliverables are achieved.



It is also his duty to schedule the project members and Subject Matter Experts in order to set time that different activities of the project will be performed.

It is also the duty of the PM to produce a financial report for the project. He has to sure all reports relating to financial transactions for the project are prepared and written in a language that stakeholders can understand.



The Project Manager must develop and manage the issue log for the project. He has to assess all issues and educate stakeholders on how all those issues can militate against project success.



#2 Tailoring

Another aspect of Technical Project Management for Project Managers is the ability to tailor both traditional and agile tools and techniques to achieve project objectives.


The Project Manager can combine two or more developmental approach for project management such as adaptive and predictive.method of managing projects to achieve it’s overall project objectives. He has to tailor project management processes to meet his project goals.


#3 Time to plan

The Project Manager also needs to make sure that he plan adequately for the project. He needs to take.tone to think through his project and prepare for risks that have been identified for the project.


This will also allow the Project Manager to prioritize diligently for the project. The chances of having a successful project are very high with this initiative.


#4 Manage Project Elements

As part of the technical project management skills for project managers, the Project Manager needs to manage all constraints that are likely to impact on the project.


Some of these constraints include schedule, cost, resources, risks among others. The Project Manager needs to ensure that he achieve his project objectives despite all these attacking constraints.
