Examining Standards and Regulations for Projects
LAST UPDATED ON: 26TH AUGUST, 2019
Standards and regulations are part of what can assist an organization in achieving the desired quality for a project.
Standards are voluntary guidelines or characteristics that have been approved by a recognized body of experts such as the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO). In some cases, the standards body will provide certification of their standards. Often, the conformance to standards is a customer requirement.
Regulations as part of Standards and Regulations
Regulations, on the other hand, are compliance mandatory characteristics for specific products, services or processes. Standards often start out as accepted or de facto best practices describing as preferred approach and may later become de jure regulations, such as using the critical path method in scheduling major construction projects.
Take for example, in the United States, as part of the rules and regulations, consumer safety legislation governs the manufacturing of products, including toys. In 2007, for example, a recall of millions of toys produced with lead-based paint led lawmakers to introduce stricter federal regulations with criminal penalties for non-compliance.
But major U.S toys retailers, in response to public demand, went further, they forced their suppliers to meet even tougher standards for using leads in surface paint.
