Project Manager vs Functional Manager: The Difference

When you find yourself in any modern-day organisation with a functional Manager and Project Managers, there is a high tendency that one will confuse the role of one for the other. In this article, I want to talk about one major reason why the role of a Project Manager seems to be different from others in an organisation. Follow me as we look at this together in this article.

The Functional Manager focuses on providing management oversight for a functional or business unit. A departmental Manager will only be in charge of a particular department. He is expected to formulate policies that will move that particular department to the desired destination. He is responsible for his department. He might not be able to account for other departments not under his jurisdiction.

The Operational Manager, on the other hand, is responsible for ensuring that business operations are efficient. They are saddled with the responsibility of maintaining the day to day operation of an organisation. They ensure that things are moving on smoothly so that the company can move forward.

The Project Manager, on the other hand, is the person assigned by a performing organisation to lead the team that is responsible for achieving project objectives. He is expected to coordinate team members who are from different departments in order to achieve the desired project goals. As I have said in one of my articles, the success or failure of a project lies on the shoulders of the Project Manager.

Project managers as a versatile individual fulfil many roles within the sphere of his influence. These roles at times might be a reflection of the interpersonal skills of the Project Manager which will always come to bear whenever he is managing any project.
