There are many dynamics that are being employed when it comes to phase relationships in project management. This process has to do with the way a project moves from one level of activity to another.
In this article, I want to talk about the two types of phased relationship that we can have in project management. Before I will do that, I will want to talk about what this relationship is all about.
Talking about phase gates…
Phase gate is a control point event where deliverable for a particular phase of a project is being checked. It help the project management team to decide whether the project should stop or move to the next phase.
You should know that at every point in a project, there what we referred to as entry and exit criteria. Entry criteria are conditions that must be fulfilled before the project can enter a particular phase while exit criteria are conditions that must be fulfilled before a project leaves a particular phase. All these must be checked before a decision can be taken on the next step of a project.
A Project Manager is always issued a Gate Letter to confirm that the project has satisfied exit requirements and can move to the next phase. In terms of software development, it uses a specialized phased relationship called. “Quality Gate”.
#1 Sequential relationship
When a Project Manager is using a sequential relationship to manage a project. He will have to plan a phase and finish it before he will begin the next phase of the project. This method is always adopted when the project management team and the Project Manager agrees that the risk is very high.
#2 Overlapping Relationship
In an overlapping relationship, the project manager will not allow a phase to finish before he moves to the next phase of the project. In this kind of method , there is always a large amount of rework if the Project Manager is not patient enough to get all the details before he moves to the next phase of the project. Take for example you have two task A and B. You now begin task B when task A is about 70% completed.
