In this article, I will be discussing the concept of Phase Gate in Project Management. This is one of the critical aspects of Project Management that is been used in order to ensure that a project has a successful outcome. Let us take a closer look at this concept in this article.
What a Phase Gate is
A Phase Gate is held at the end of a phase. This is the time that project performance is compared with the original and a decision is been made whether the project can move to the next phase or not. At times, A letter called a gate letter will be issued to the Project manager to indicate that stakeholders are satisfied with his performance.
The document created at the end of the phase gate compares the project performance in relation to the business case, project management plan, project charter, benefits management plan among others.
At the end of the comparison, a decision will be made on whether to continue to the next phase of the project. They might also decide to continue with slight modification, end the project, remain in the project or repeat the process that has just been completed over again.
Also, depending on the organisation, industry or type of work been performed, the phase may be given some other names such as phase review, stage gate, kill point or phase exit among others.
