An iterative method is used when the activities of the projects are repeated in phases from the beginning to the end. When a Project Manager is using this method, he will not have to do all the planning at one. Subsequent level of details is added as the project moves from one phase to another.

You should note that deliverables are always produced at the end of every iteration. When the products are now accepted, the Project Manager can now get authorization to move the project to the next level. The final deliverable will now be an accumulation of all changes that have been made in the course of the iterations.

Iterative or incremental methods are chosen when it is necessary to deliver the project in parts. It may also be adopted when the risk for a project is very high and the organisation is not ready to take a big risk. It allows the organisation to manage risks gradually and increase the knowledge of the team as they move from one phase of the project to another.
