Many of us have fantasized about one day being our own bosses, at least once in a lifetime. Maybe this thought comes from a very good business idea you may have, or maybe you are stuck in a job you do not like. Whether the motivation is inspiration or frustration, getting out of the comfort zone of a comfortable job can be both exciting and very scary.
How do you know if the time is right? Unfortunately, there is no perfect answer to this question, but there are some things you can do to help you make a more informed decision about taking this step.
A good way to start is this: make a list of the things you value most about your job – such as culture, industry, role, or salary – and then rank by importance per try. This can help you understand what your priorities are when it comes to careers.
For example, if you value team culture as the most important point, then it is probably not a very good idea to work as a private consultant. But if you are interested in the role of CEOs, maybe this means that the time has come to start thinking about entrepreneurship.
Of course, starting your own business often means making huge financial sacrifices, at least until you start earning money. Even if salary is not the part you value most about your job, you need to thoroughly analyze your personal finances, and realize how long you have been left without a monthly salary while pursuing your dream of independence.
If this exercise reveals that you are happier when you are alone, and the financial part enables it, then you will need something unique to bring it into the world. Your area of expertise may be overwhelmed with competitors, so you will need to understand which vacancy it covers in the market.
