These are the five qualities of good project objectives…
Project objectives can be defined as the criteria that are been used to measure whether a project is successful or not There are some criteria that must be present in a good project management objective. Follow me as we look at these objectives together.
A good project objective must be specific. When we say that an objective must be specific, it means when you tell someone that this is what I want to do, there must be no further question as far as the objective is concerned. “I want to go into I.T” for example is an objective that has not been narrowed down yet because I.T is very broad. If I say I want to become a Cisco Certified Networking Associate certified person, that objective is clear enough.
This is another quality of a good project objective. If we say an objective is quantifiable, that means you should be able to measure it in terms of how much it is going to cost, the time it is going to take as well as a quality specification for the project.
#3 Realistic and amenable
A good Project objective must be realistic and amenable. Anytime you are coming up with objectives for a project, you must not be daydreaming about it. You have to come up with something that is achievable. You should also be able to adjust the plan to reflect present reality.
#4 Consistency as part of project objectives
One other factor that is important for a good project objective is that it must be in line with the operational and strategic objectives of the organisation. It must also be in line with the plans, policies and procedures of the organisation. There is no need for embarking on a project if it will not help you to achieve the strategic visions of the organisation.
#5 One objective
The Project objective must include at least one objective that the organisation set to achieve. That means a project must not be done for the sake of it. There must be a specific reason why the project is been proposed.
The project must have one objective or several goals as the case may be. Sub-objectives can be added in order to further clarify project objectives and goals.
Here is how you can apply the 8/80 rule for Projects…
In my previous article, I have stressed the need for you to divide your project activities into work packages so that it can be manageable.
One of the rules of dividing project activities into manageable chunks is called “Work Package”. Before you can do it successfully, you have to follow the 8/80 rule. This is what I will be looking at in this article.
The 8/80 rule refers to a general guideline regarding work packages. It states that a work package should not be less than 8 hours (a day), and it should also not be more than 80 hours (2 weeks).
For those of us that are working in private organisations, you spend 8 hours daily at work. You will go to work normally from Monday to Friday. That is 40 hours a week. Now, you can see where 80 hours comes from.
This tells you that when you are dividing the work, you have to make sure that the biggest tasks are not more than two weeks and the smallest task do not take less than a day. Even if it is one hour, you still have to assign a day to such a task.
