Examining the Design of Experiments for Projects
Design of Experiments are techniques that are used to systematically identify lack of independent variables. Design of Experiments as a quality control tool can be used to determine:
- Which variable has the greatest effect?
- What the relationship is between each variable and the customer-focused quality specification.
- What the best value is for each variable to ensure optimal quality or value.
With this quality control tool, you will be able to understand where the greatest problem lies for your project. That means when you identify the component that has the greatest problem, you will be able to know what can be done to address such problem.
When these processes are done properly, Design of Experiments can result in significant improvements to products and processes, including shorter development cycles, more robust products and cost reduction for the project.
An instance of the use of DOE…
A Cannery was about to bring forth a new style of the jar into production. As the development of the packaging moves forward, questions arose regarding the ability of the in-line crapper to deliver the precise amount of torque when rotating the lid onto the new jar.
Early testing demonstrated that if torque less than three inch-pound will result in a leaky package. Torque greater than eight pounds will mar the finish on the screw-on lid.
Given the task of determining the optimum torque requirement for new packaging, the project team used a design of experiments software program to generate statistical information about how torque was affected by other interconnected factors. Two of the factors tested were spindle speed and conveyor speed. The results indicated that these speeds have the greatest effect on lid torque.
Armed with this information, it was a simple exercise in determining adjustments of these settings that will result in consistent optimum torque. The experiment employed by the project team was successful because it was able to identify the variable that had the greatest effect and its relationship for the quality specification of the lid torque.
