5 Major Characteristics of Project Complexity

In this article, I want to look at some of the major characteristics of project Complexity. When approaching the integration of a project, the Project Manager should examine the characteristics or properties of the project. Here are some of the characteristics of project Complexity for any organisation.

characteristics of project Complexity

#1 Multiple parts

One of the major Characteristics of project complexity is that it has many parts. For a project to be complex, it must have interdependencies of many departments and functions that will determine how decisions are being made on such an organisation. The Project Manager has to understand these multiple parts in order to function effectively.

#2 Connection between parts

Another major element of project complexity is that it has a connection between the different parts of the project. That means in a system,  there are areas where the systems are interlinked in order to produce results. The Project Manager needs to understand the project and functional boundaries in order to influence the system to his own advantage.

#3 Dynamic Interactions

The Project Manager also has to understand the dynamic interactions between different parts of a system. He has to know the level of interaction as well as the level of relationships between different components is different. It is not the way that you relate with the Sales Manager as a stakeholder that you will also relate with the Project Sponsor or direct end-users.

#4 Exhibiting behaviour

Other major characteristics of project complexity are that it exhibits behaviours produced as a result of these interactions that cannot be explained as the simple sum of the facts. That means at times, it is difficult to predict what will be the outcome of interactions in a system.

Examining these various items that appear to make project complex should help the Project Manager identify key areas when planning, managing and controlling the project to guarantee the integration of project processes.
