Revealed: 6 Major Components of the PMBOK Guide

Introduction

Today, I will be looking at the PMBOK Guide. It is is one of the compendia that you need to read for your PMP exam. I want to talk about six major components of the Project Management Body of Knowledge otherwise known as the PMBOK Guide.

 

Firstly, Project Management as a discipline and profession consist of several key components. If these components are well managed by a project manager, it can lead to a successful project. The PMBOK Guide explains clearly how a project can be managed successfully.

Also, the guide is not separate from one another. There are areas that they interrelate. Their relationships will be covered in my future articles.

 

#1 Project lifecycle

In analysing a project lifecycle, they are the series of phases that a project passes through from its start to its completion.

 

#2 Phase Gate

Phase gate is a collection of logically related project activities that culminates in the completion of one or more deliverables.

 

#3 Project Phase under the PMBOK Guide

Also, Project Phase is a collection of logically related project activities that culminates in the completion of one or more deliverables.

 

#4 Project Management processes

This is a systematic series of activities directed towards causing an end result. It happens where one or more inputs will be acted upon to create one or more outputs.

 

#5 Project management process group

Furthermore, the Project Management process group is a logical grouping of project management inputs, tools and techniques, and outputs. It can be said that the Project Management Process Groups include Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling and Closing. Project management processes groups are not project phases. They are completely different.

 

#6 Project Management knowledge area

Project Management Knowledge area is an identified area of project management. It is defined by its knowledge requirement. It is also being described in terms of its component processes and practices. This also includes inputs, tools and techniques.
