Here are the four types of precedence relationship for projects…

 

A Precedence Relationship is the logical relationship between two activities that describes the sequence in which the activities should be carried out. Each of the activities in precedence relationship has two points: Start and Finish. The Precedence relationship always considers some form of logic while determining the relationship between the two tasks. The logic is to determine which of the two points should come first.

In Precedence relationship, we can have predecessor activity which comes later and successor activity which must come first. A Good example is that, in painting, the wall must dry first before painting can take place.

Dependency determination
Dependency determination is the identification of the dependencies of one activity over the other. Dependency activity involves establishing the precedence relationship among activities and creating a logical relationship between them.



Precedence relationship types…



#1 Finish to start FS
The precedence relationship between two activities in which the predecessor activity must finish before the successor activity can start. A good example is that the ground floor must finish before the first floor can start.




#2 Finish to Finish FF
This is a form of relationship in which both predecessor and successor activity must finish at the same time. That also means the successor activity can finish. The Building construction must finish before inspection of the building for quality assurance can finish.



#3 Start to start SS
This is a form of relationship between two activities where predecessor activity must start before the successor activity can start. A good example is where building design must start before the electrical layout design can start. Here also, the duration of the two tasks can vary based on the time that each of them is starting.



#4 Start to finish SF
This is a form of precedence relationship between two activities where the predecessor activity must start before the successor activity must finish. A good example is that electrical installation (Activity A) must start before you can finish the drywalling (Activity B).
